Health Beyond Communities, Inc is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing global humanitarian efforts and education to help communities become self-sufficient in meeting the health needs of their community.
Throughout the years medical professional schools have started to incorporate philanthropy and volunteerism into their curriculum. And many students feel there it is their moral obligation to raise the level of health care and help underserved communities. Volunteering, helps open the mind to cultural diversity and appreciate and serve in communities of socioeconomic disparities. Philanthropy and volunteerism cannot be taught in the classroom.
A survey of 500 dental students in 2013 proved students want to increase their knowledge and self-awareness culturally. They also want their schools to provide them with an opportunity to volunteer for a humanitarian trip to experience interactive learning. This would also help increase cultural competence and reduce racial and ethnic disparities. Worldwide 60-90% of all school children and 100% of adults have cavities. It is estimated that 30% of all people aged 65-75 have no natural teeth. The World Health Organization has found a strong correlation between the low socioeconomic status and a high rate of oral disease in both children and adults. There are several contributing risk factors to oral disease including poor diet, tobacco, alcohol, poor oral hygiene and social determinants.
